>WORK IN PROGRESS:

Everything we do is in the process. We don't produce music. We improvise and perform it. Every gig is different.
In this section we list un-edited live recordings, dj sets and ideas in progress.

Text and Machines
When we (DIET) met this time, we had set ourselves ambitious goals – and failed at most of them. In retrospect, it was really about two things: first, the question of how to connect text and music. And second: building, playing, discussing, and getting desperate over machines.

Since October, we’ve been carrying around the “finished” interviews with us. In Italy, the interviews were actually supposed to be the main focus, but in the end the discussions got stuck on side issues. That was extremely enriching, but it still leaves open the question of what we are actually supposed to do with the interviews. Where is the closing line? Where are the derived theses? And what would be the point if the interviews hadn’t brought about some kind of change in our ways of working and thinking?

We had great plans. From the interviews and discussions, Julian created a fancy word cloud, which was meant to serve as the basis for musical text work. An artist couple was given that word cloud and thought they were supposed to come up with some killer lyrics based on it. That was difficult, and the frustration in the session was basically inevitable. You could also describe it as a permanent crisis.

Instead, a verbal therapy session took place, which mentally overwhelmed everyone completely (see Track 5). In further recordings, the speakers were then allowed to react vocally to their own former vocal recordings (aka reaction audio).

After that, Horst went to bed, and we improvised while Isa was reading poems from a book she had gotten recently (see Track 1). Everything was rather accidental – Isa was apparently looking for a textual basis and had the poems with her because she was actually supposed to paint pictures to visualize them.

The next day, two friends dropped by; we cooked, drank wine, and recorded a session. Here, the guitar imitated the modular synth (Track 4). The guitar sings the text of the modular synth. But when Julian started asking all his questions, everyone got tired and went to bed – except for us. We were disillusioned, but somehow also amused, and completely unprepared we recorded a track in which the text was simply improvised and mumbled live, which, in a funny way, sums up the discussions of the previous days (Track 2).

Track 6 is a recording with Minus, who played a New Year’s Eve gig for us. For this track, he improvised freely with lyrics from his own songs, and unlike the rest of the texts, it is directly political.

In summary, you could say: our wish to bring more text into our music has somehow been fulfilled – but in a completely different way than we had imagined. In the end, there’s probably nothing left for us to do but finally write our own lyrics to the music.

Thanks to everyone who took part. Despite all the ups and downs, it was an exciting round.

In January we thought about whether, where and to whom we would like to play this year. Bulgaria again, at a party, or write to places. But we weren't really motivated. We were too afraid that we would go to a lot of trouble again and still not know why we were doing it. At the same time, we were still wondering how to publish our music. That's why we decided to start by talking to people and looking for answers.

The idea of doing interviews was an obvious one. We also realized that exactly 20 years ago there was a series of interviews with musicians and bands in the Wildcat. [making music is killing music] .

We went back to these interviews and realized that we wanted to ask many of the same questions again. Expanded by the question of listening to music and publishing, which has accompanied us for years and never leaves us alone. The fact that the current Wildcat deals with the topic of “AI” and has taken apart the economics of internet platforms in recent years has given us further impetus.
We have now started the interviews, which we want to complete by late summer 2025. Afterwards, we are inviting you to a session where we not only want to play, but also engage in discussion. Get in touch if you want to know more! (mail: [email protected]) You are also welcome to take the questionnaire and send us your answers. Status 04/2025

gretzky_x3x@absurdoom
We wanted to play b2b. Gretzky with a controller. x3x with vinyl. The theme was "bouncy beats." It took us a long time to explain and demonstrate what we each meant by that. Gretzky brought new music to each meeting and changed the style. x3x tried to adapt with existing records. Ultimately, we got along and then ended up doing everything differently. But we did it, and that's why you can hear it. Bouncy or not.

Lotte! Thanks for the painted picture.

We were approached by friends for this performance. Isabella Trybula had heard the beginning of our clinic set from Bulgaria and wanted a similar sound for her own performance. Since we had not yet accompanied a performance and were also very interested in experiencing the reverb of the prison, we agreed to participate.

For the music of the performance, we reused the performance strategy from the clinic set in Bulgaria. Instead of using free improvisation on the keyboard, we worked with samples that were played alongside a drum machine programmed during the performance. As usual, the drum machine was processed through a modular synthesizer. Some of the samples came from Isa, who had recorded her voice in preparation for the performance. Others were recordings made in the prison or recordings of a modified version of the AUTOMATISM modular synthesizer.

For the audio recordings, we once again set up an ambient microphone, which was later mixed into the recordings as reverb. The microphone was placed on the second floor of the prison, while our equipment and the speakers were set up on the ground floor.

The context of the event raised various questions for us—some of which we couldn't answer, and others we deliberately left unanswered. One central issue was the former Stasi prison and its relation to present-day prisons or emergency shelters. However, due to a lack of time and space to engage with these topics in depth, the questions remain unresolved for us as well.

Being part of an art show funded by the federal state also felt somewhat uncomfortable—especially because the payment was far too low! Nevertheless, it was an exciting experience, and we especially enjoyed the evening of preparation in the prison.

DIET: LIVE IN BULGARIA
This year we played two concerts in Bulgaria again. Almost no audience. Really unfriendly hosts. No food, no drinks. But sometimes anger helps to shape ideas.  So we took our time at a friend's place and reworked our live performance. It's less now. Less instruments and more focused improvisation. And suddenly it sounds more. This recording was done at the second concert. It was raining heavily, and there were leaks in the roof ("It's gonna BUUUUUURRRN!").

The idea of the set is based on a visit to a rehabilitation facility on Sylt. The songs use samples and ideas from that place. Some are recordings of guided meditation; others are the sounds of automatic massage machines. But some of the samples are kids interviewing each other. Totally unrelated.

Technically, this is our first recording in which we use a Midi synced setup. The sync helps us to keep the timing and have more mental space for musical creativity.

x3x: DJ SET AT ROTE KÜCHE
A few hours after our performance at Taba Record Store in Sofia we listened to an exciting DJ set from Elena Colombi. Since that time we stalked a lot of older DJ sets. Ultimately, we discovered her label "osàre!". This vinyl only set is a blind kiss from wueste.info to the unkown artists from osàre! Thanks for the sounds and the inspiration. ... merci! to "Werkstattkneipe" and "Rote Küche" (where we recorded this DJ set).

WAR
WAR was a small art camp we held over the New Year period in 2023/2024. We painted, jammed, and filmed some videos. It was all fun and easy. The idea was to discuss the sentence 'War ist die Vergangenheit von Sein' with our kids.

DIET: LIVE AT TABA
We played a concert at the Taba Record Store in Sofia (Bulgaria). Taba is a beautiful independent record store with a regular line up of DJs and Musicians performing there. The concert was recorded (Thanks Vlad!). A small break in the middle was removed from the recording. The rest is a simple stereo recording of the set. No mixing - just some little mastering.

The set was played just a week after the attack on a music festival in Israel. The attack followed us and was part of our daily conversations and gave the live set a much darker and sad atmosphere.

Anna! Thanks for the painted picture.

DIET: LIVE AT KLANGKULISSE
This perfomance took place at the klangkulisse festival in Jesendorf (Germany). The place has a very interesting acoustic delay of the sound system and a concrete wall on the other side. This delay effect converted the location into a huge phaser when you moved between the sound system and the wall. Next time a moving live microphone will be needed.

DIET: LIVE AT PASTE
This performance took at a party i Potsdam. It started at midnight und took some hours. Nothing was recorded. A saxophone player joined for some time.

DIET: LIVE AT WAGENPLATZ KAROW - GINKA SESSION
This live performance took place Ginka's birthday (now officially called Gudrun). Wagenplatz Karow is a self organized community in suburban Berlin. Julian messed up the recording with his stereo/mono-problem (No that mono-button is not ok!). Only Mp3s available.

FRUEHSCHICHT RECORDING
We wrote texts, ate "Mettbrötchen" and made music together (also with a selfbuild machine). Frühschicht means early shift in German. The Songs are structured after the timeline of shiftworker. Sleeping, waking up, working, working hard, working tired and resting. We woke up everyday at the time of an early shift and created music at a time where music usually isn't created.

DIET: OFFSET RELEASE
